Case 5
digital smile design
Our wonderful patient had been coming to Blue Bird Dentistry for 14 years and had maintained good oral health during that period. However, when Covid-19 struck, he began working from home, and this led to some dental concerns, including:
- Tooth wear and decay from dietary changes—The patient began consuming large amounts of citric fruits, mainly lemons. Their acidic nature caused severe erosion to his tooth enamel.
- Tooth wear from bruxism—He also began grinding his teeth, causing them to wear down.
Before these dental issues, the patient was vivacious and confident. He had a funny, cheerful personality and was a joy to be around. Sadly, his worn teeth caused his self-confidence to plummet, and he no longer felt like smiling.
The patient’s smile goals were simple; he wanted to eat his favorite sandwiches and smile without covering his mouth. He feared that neither of those things would ever happen again.
When he came into our dental office to discuss treatment, we began planning his treatment by
- Using 3-D printing to create a digital smile design
- Discussing his smile goals with him
- Explaining his treatment timeline
- Answering any questions about what to expect
We agreed that restoring the his upper teeth with ten dental crowns would produce the best outcome. For this procedure, we followed these steps:
- First, we prepared his teeth for the dental crowns.
- Next, we placed temporary crowns on his teeth while his custom porcelain crowns were being created.
- Once they were ready, we removed the temporary crowns and cemented the permanent crowns in place before checking his bite.
After the patient saw the results of his smile transformation, he couldn’t believe how quickly his everyday life improved; he immediately felt happy again. He found himself smiling all the time and could once again eat whatever he wanted. Not only that, but the patient was motivated to change some habits to improve his oral and overall health.
The process exceeded the patient’s expectations, and now he’s ready to transform his lower teeth with dental crowns.
